Painting Emotions - A masterclass on Intuitive art

A masterclass on introduction to Intution based art
Date 6 September , 10.30 am IST
Every time I teach a masterclass, I make it easier for the ones trying.
And I have realised, in making it easy, I also reduce some of its magic.
Because truly, when I change a material I use, simplify a process I follow, or remove something because I think this might be too much for you I am, in some way, stealing a little bit of the experience from you.
Don't get me wrong, my intentions are only pure.
I want you to be able to live the art for a few hours with me.
But perhaps you are unable to experience it the way I do because I keep making it EASY for you. So I have decided against that this time.
Painting Your Emotions will not be the easiest.
I want to share my process as closely as I can the strange beauty of really living an emotion, staying with it for a little while, surrounding yourself with it, and then watching it find its way into your art.
I invite you to an immersive art experience.
What I am sharing with you is a very personal part of my own artistic process. A tiny part of what it means to connect with your creative intuition not by thinking harder, but by experiencing more.
And so, when we meet, we won't experience art only through paint.
We will experience it through what we see.
Through what we touch.
Through what we hear.
Our eyes, our hands, our ears.
And perhaps somewhere between all three, something else begins to speak.
If you are on this page because you received an email from me, or found your way here through one of my platforms, and haven't registered yet you can register here.
And if you have already registered...
We have some work to do.
1. Choose a memory
Choose a memory you like.
Something that probably has a little place in your heart.
It could be the day you became a mother.
But it could also be as simple as the walk you took yesterday.
I actually like choosing the simplest memories. The ones where nothing major happened, but somehow there was a moment inside them that stayed.
A cup of tea somewhere.A particular afternoon.A conversation.A road you walked on.Someone sitting beside you.
We are so used to believing that the important emotions must belong to the important events. I don't think they always do.
Once you find your memory, write about it for 10 minutes.
Not five.
Not I think I am done now.
Ten.
What do I mean by free writing?
I almost want you to write until your hand starts hurting.
Because something happens when you write for longer than what feels necessary.
In the beginning, it might sound almost like a school essay.
I went here. This person was there. Then this happened...
And then somewhere around the seventh, eighth, ninth minute, you get a little tired of yourself.
You forget to sound good.
You forget that anyone might ever read it.
And slowly, what you remember starts mixing with how you remember it.
That is where I want you to go.
We are looking for the non-performative piece.
The one that wasn't written to sound beautiful.
What did you see?
What was around you?
Who was there?
What tiny detail do you suddenly remember?
What did that place feel like?
Write all of it.
And if you don't know which memory or emotion you want to paint yet, beautiful.
Write about many.
You don't need to decide right now.
Let the memories show you which one wants to come with you to the painting.
2. Now give your memory some music
I have a playlist for almost everything.
I have music for when I paint. Music for when I pray. Music I play before a class. Songs that seem to belong to particular versions of me.
So I want you to start finding the music that belongs to this memory.
Try to find five songs.
But if five feels impossible, find one.
One song is enough to begin.
And don't become too particular about genre or whether the song makes sense.
Please don't make this another thing to get right.
Think of the songs that don't leave your ears.
The slightly embarrassing one you still love.
The song that immediately takes you somewhere.
The one you haven't heard in ten years but somehow remember every word of.
We are looking for your songs.
And then listen to them.
While you walk. While you work. While you cook. While you do absolutely nothing.
Let your memory have a soundtrack for a few days.
3. And now, give it a world
Make a Pinterest board.
Or don't. Make a little folder on your phone if that feels more natural.
And start collecting images.
Of the people, perhaps.
The place.
The clothes.
The flowers.
The weather.
The colours.
But then go a little further.
Find photographs that have absolutely nothing to do with your actual memory but somehow feel like it. Want to know how ? Here is a quick 5 min session , of me scrolling and making my own mood board lets do it together to see how you can make it creative and artistic .
What you will need for the masterclass
You will need a surface to paint on.
If you already have canvas cloth from an art roll, beautiful. Use it.
If you don't, please don't go buying an enormous roll of canvas for one morning with me.
A canvas pad works beautifully — it is essentially a book filled with canvas sheets that you can remove.
You will also need acrylic paints.
Nothing fancy.
Any brand you already have is good. A set of 12 or 24 shades is more than enough.
And keep around:
water
a few old rags or pieces of cloth
some paper or a notebook
a pen
That's really it.
Don't overthink the preparation.
For now, I only want you to remember, write, listen and collect.
Let yourself live with this memory for a little while.
By the time we meet, perhaps it will already feel slightly different from when you began.
And then we will see what happens when we give it paint.
